Biophilic Design

Biophilic Design

“Biophilia” is the human tendency to be innately connected with nature and living organisms, and biophilic design aims to tap into that tendency.

In short, the purpose of biophilic design concept is to enhance well-being, sustainability, and even productivity through the integration of our connection to nature into human spaces!

Below are a couple examples of Biophilic Design:

Main Aspects of Biophilic Design!

Natural Elements:

Firstly, biophilic design wouldn’t be what it is without natural elements: plantswater features, natural light, views of nature. These elements help not only mimic nature, create that sense of vitality and connection to the outdoors.

Natural Materials:

Materials like stonebamboo, and wood not only aid in adding the textures and colors of nature into a space, but they also add visual interest.

Natural Light:

Building off the first aspect, natural light is super important to biophilic design. This can be achieved through skylights and large windows that bring in a lot of daylight or give views of the landscape around.

Biomorphic Forms:

Biomorphic forms are essentially shapes, patterns, and motifs inspired by nature. Curved lines and fractal patterns are a couple examples that are commonly seen in the elements, furniture and decor of biophilic design!

Sensory Experience:

This design concept is also largely about the ability to engage and stimulate our senses. Things such as water features, natural materials and greenery engage the sight and touch senses, while natural sounds and aromas enhance the smell and sound experience.

Connection & Health:

Naturally, exposure to nature has shown to have positive effects on our health and well-being. As biophilic design integrates nature into interior design, it has the potential to reduce stress, and even improve creativity as well as cognitive function!

Biophilic Color Palette

There is no one standard color palette associated with biophilic design, so I’ve made a color palette inspired by nature and its earthy and green tones! Check it out below:

Here’s the PPG color list:

  • Water Chestnut (PPG1078-2)

  • Rock Cliffs (PPG1101-4)

  • Organic (PPG1029-6)

  • Fern Glow (PPG1222-7)

  • Antique Moss (PPG1222-7)

  • Mountain Forest (PPG1130-7)

I hope you’ve learned something new from this short article about biophilic design! Personally, I think this is an awesome interior design concept with a beautiful purpose, albeit rather expensive.
