Color measurement basics

Turn a visual color target into measurable data—and use that data to control every production sample.

In industrial production, color control begins with a color standard. A spectrophotometer measures the standard and converts its appearance into precise CIE L*a*b* values—the scientific way to characterize color.

The same instrument then measures a product sample under controlled conditions. The software compares the two measurements and shows exactly how the sample differs from the standard.

You can see the numerical color difference, including the ΔE value, together with a clear verbal description: lighter or darker, greener or redder, bluer or yellower.

Measure the standard

Capture the target color as objective CIE L*a*b* data.

Check the product using the same measurement conditions.

Compare and adjust

Use ΔE and directional information to make the right adjustment.

Result: color approval becomes an objective, repeatable process rather than a visual judgment that may vary by person, lighting, or production location.
