Color Drenching

Color Drenching

About This Color Technique

If you are interested in possibly achieving something similar to the image above or have a favorite color you wouldn’t mind filling up a space with, keep reading!

How to Execute it

  1. Choose a Bold Color

Typically, the color chosen for color drenching is rich, intense, and deeply saturated. This draws attention and sets the tone for the space’s energy and ambiance.

The inspiration image above is a perfect example, as it features a rich, deep red drenching the space.

  1. Achieving Consistency

The color you choose is then typically applied across the walls, ceilings and floor to create that harmonious “color drench” visual effect.

To achieve an even more consistent color drench, apply it to elements in the room such as furniture, textiles, and accessories. Doing this also eliminates visual clutter.

  1. Monochromatic Color Palette

Though the primary goal of this technique is to immerse your space in one main color, this doesn’t mean you can’t have other shades of that color in the space.

In other words, use different shades, tones, and tints of your chosen color to create a monochromatic color palette that you can further decorate your space with.

In fact, incorporating some different variations of that color can give your space further dimension, depth and interest!

Take a look at this color palette as an example:

  1. Accents & Contrast

Sort of like how you can add different shades of your chosen color to your space’s color palette, you can also choose to introduce accent colors.

Complementary colors or neutral tones against the strong color that dominates a majority of the space can create both visual interest and balance!

  1. Consider Lighting

Lighting has the power to influence how we perceive color, so naturally it is important to consider. From natural light to artificial lighting and color temperature, lighting can definitely influence how a color appears.

Thus, it is crucial that when you are selecting your color, you consider both paint finishes and lighting solutions that enhance the color and not distort it.

  1. Color Psychology

I’ve talked about color psychology on here before, and with a technique like color drenching it’s especially important to take into account how a color can impact your emotions.

Every color can evoke different moods, feelings and associations - from warmth and coziness, serenity and vibrancy, to even anger and depression in certain cases. This is why it’s a good idea to research the psychological effects behind your color before fully committing to it, just in case.

All in all, I believe this is a super cool color technique. Especially if executed with intention, you can definitely get some awesome-looking results!
